Cottage cheese will last 7-10 days longer if you store it upside down. When you open cottage cheese spores enter from the air and live on the oxygen layer. When you turn cottage cheese upside down and allow it to fall to the top, you eliminate a percentage of the oxygen layer.

Many of the remaining spores then suffocate and ones that remain cannot grow as fast allowing the cottage cheese to last about 7-10 days longer. If you want to keep cottage cheese fresh, another method is to add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to the carton and stir it in well. This will really keep it fresh for a long period of time.
